About Pala

A river town with a long memory

Pala sits on the banks of the Meenachil river in Kottayam district, at the edge of the hills that rise toward Vagamon and the Western Ghats. For centuries it was a riverside market town, where pepper, spices and later rubber from the surrounding hills were traded and sent downstream.

Today Pala is known as the heart of central Kerala's rubber country, and for its deep Syro-Malabar Christian heritage. Nearby Bharananganam is home to the shrine of St. Alphonsa, and every December the town lights up for the Pala Jubilee celebrations around the Kurishupally.

It is also a town of schools and colleges, churches and temples, good food and unhurried evenings. A good place, in other words, to stay on the quiet side.
